Home About the Department Introduction

Department of Chemistry of the University of Hong Kong continues research in the traditional programs of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, but is also engaged in applications and interdisciplinary studies culminating in active research programs in, namely, Materials Science, Chemical Biology, Sensors Research, Environmental Science, Drug Discovery and Computational Chemistry.

The Department seeks to sustain and enhance its excellence as a first-rate Chemistry Department both within the region and in the world. Through world-class research and quality teaching, the Department's missions are to produce top quality research at the cutting edge of chemistry and to be an internationally recognized first class research chemistry department providing excellence in teaching for all students, and providing professional services to the community to tackle problems in biology, medicine, new materials, energy and environmental protection.

We offer various degree programmes at the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels. For undergraduate level, a new Faculty Admission policy has been launched since 2007 and students are allowed to have a choice of 16 Science majors in one degree using one programme choice Bachelor of Science (6901) in their application. The Department administers two of the majors, namely, Major in Chemistry and Major in Materials Science. For postgraduate level, we have Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Normally the duration for MPhil is 2-year of study while for PhD is 3 or 4 years of study. The Department has graduated more than 200 PhD degrees.

Many of these graduates are now holding important positions in the Government, the private sectors, and academic institutions. Currently, the student enrolment in the Department has about 200 undergraduates reading for a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry (Year 2 and Year 3), B.Sc. degree in Chemistry with Management (Year 2 and Year 3). For Year 3 students, they can choose to specialize one of the four themes: Pure Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry. There are about 145 postgraduate students reading for M.Phil. or Ph.D. degrees by research.
