  Research Interest

    NMR Spectroscopy

Investigation of two-dimensional Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) and hybrid three-dimensional DOSY techniques (e.g. HMQC-DOSY etc.....) for chemical analysis of multi-component mixtures.

Autoxidation Chemistry of Natural Products

The chemical structures of a very large number of highly oxygenated terpene natural products may be explicable in terms of the autoxidation reactions of tri-substituted double bonds and a few simple rearrangement reactions of the allylic hydroperoxide autoxidation products so formed. Current research is directed towards understanding the role that other functional groups in a molecule play in directing the course of these autoxidation and rearrangement reactions.

Chemistry and Biology of Artemisinin

Artemisinin, a natural product from the Chinese plant Artemisia annua, is the most promising new drug for the treatment of malaria. Current research projects include an investigation of the biosynthetic route to artemisinin using stable isotopes (for NMR analysis), the induction of artemisinin biosynthesis in plant tissue cultures and investigation of endophytic fungi from Artemisia annua for accumulation of this compound. The aim of these research projects is to facilitate in vitro artemisinin production on a commercial scale.
