New Analytical Methods Development

Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) and Related Separation Techniques: Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE), Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography (MEKC), Capillary Electrochromatography (CEC), Microchip-CE (Chip-CE), Micro-Total Analytical System (£gTAS) and Microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip System (£g-Lab-on-a-Chip).

Integrating Separation with Detection & Sample Pretreatment: Detection by Laser Induced Fluorescence detection (LIF), Electrochemical & Electroluminescence detector (ECD/ELSD) for Chip-CE, £gTAS and £g-Lab-on-a-Chip; Sample Pretreatment by Flow Injection Method (FID), Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), Micro-Solid Phase Extraction (£gSPE) and Molecular Imprinted Polymer (MIP).

Chemical and Biosensors: Piezoelectric Quartz Crystal (PQC) Chemical Sensor, PQC Immunosensor, PQC DNA/PCR Biosensor, Electrochemical sensors based on Micro-electrode (£gElectrode), Cathodic Stripping Analysis (CSV) & Electroluminescence.

Chemometric Methods: Assessing the quality of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pollution Source Apportionment by Chemical Analysis /Factor Analysis (CA-FA).

Application to Food & Drugs, Environmental and Biomedical Analysis

Food & Pharmaceutical Analysis: 1) Determination of pesticides in vegetables by CSV, 2) Geno-typing of Ginsengs from different botanical origin by CE and chip-CE, 3) Assessing the quality of Traditional Chinese Medicine by CA-FA.

Environmental Analysis: 1) £gElectrode for insitu determination of pesticides in frog¡¦s eggs, 2) Analysis of carbonyls, carboxylic acids and other pollutants in air by CE and Microchip CE, 3) Analysis of pesticide residual in drinking water by CE & MEKC, 4) Sensing VOCs and air particulate matters by PQC.

Biomedical Analysis: 1) CE and Chip-CE assay of free and albumin-bound bilirubin in newborn babies, 2) PQC Biosensor based on antibody-antigen interaction for assay of Salmonella, 3) PQC DNA Biosensor for assay of E. Coli after PCR amplification, 4) Microchip CE with Tunable LIF Detection for assay of Flavin derivatives, 5) Apportion sources of air particulates by CA-FA for their health effect on human respiratory system.

New Electrochemical/Nanotechnologies

Nanotechnology: Sizing, collection & characterization of industrial & biomedical nano-particles, fabrication of electrophoretic coatings and developing Quantum Dots for industrial & biomedical application.

Room Temperature Molten Salt (RTMS) Technologies: Study and application of 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazollium chloride/AlCl3 RTMS for secondary Lithium Ion Battery and for Electrodeposition of alloys and superconductor precursors.

Lab-on-a-chip: Technology for chemical analysis in the field and for bedside clinical assay.
